What Are UV-Curing Security Inks?

UV-curing inks are printing inks that dry by polymerisation rather than by evaporation or absorption. Exposed to ultraviolet light immediately after printing, the ink film hardens almost instantly, forming a stable, durable layer with strong adhesion — including on plastic and polymer surfaces, where conventional oxidative-drying inks are not the right choice.

How UV-Curing Inks Work

The difference from conventional inks is in how the film is formed:

Printing: the ink is transferred to the substrate on an offset press in the normal way.
Curing: under UV exposure the formulation polymerises and the ink film hardens rapidly, rather than drying through oxidation and absorption.
Result: significantly reduced drying times, with minimal set-off and smudging on high-speed presses.
Security layer: the cured film carries the functional component — fluorescent response at 365 nm or 254 nm, multi-fluorescent checkpoints, or up conversion from IR to visible light.

Printing Considerations

Printing method: offset presses equipped with UV curing units.
Substrate: suitable for plastic and polymer surfaces as well as paper. For paper-only work see conventional inks.
