Paper and Banknote
For banknotes and other secure paper documents, Nanografi Inks deliver precise offset print quality with integrated security elements like color-shifting pigments and IR detection. Outstanding rub resistance and stable color fidelity under repeated handling make these inks ideal for currency applications, significantly raising the barrier to counterfeiting.

The Security Challenge
Banknotes and security papers are handled more than any other printed document. A note may be folded, wetted, machine-counted and passed between thousands of people before it is withdrawn from circulation, and it has to stay verifiable through all of it.
It is also checked in three very different ways: by the public in about a second, by cash handlers and retail staff with a UV lamp, and by high-speed sorting equipment in cash centres. Counterfeiters work against the weakest of those three checks. Modern scanners and inkjet systems can reproduce a visible design closely enough to survive a glance, which is why the features that actually stop a counterfeit are the ones a copier cannot see — fluorescent response, infrared behaviour, and how the ink film interacts with the substrate.
How Nanografi Security Inks Are Used
- Visible inks carry the printed design and have to hold colour fidelity at high offset print speeds while resisting fading over the note’s circulation life.
- UV offset security inks stay invisible in daylight and fluoresce under 365 nm long-wave or 254 nm short-wave illumination. Bi- and tri-fluorescent formulations respond differently at different wavelengths, giving a second-line check that a scan cannot capture.
- IR security inks work through infrared absorption or reflection. Because they sit outside the visible spectrum they are read by machine rather than by eye, which is what makes them useful in high-speed sorting and validation equipment.
Banknote and security paper printing is paper-based work, so conventional oxidative-drying inks are the natural system here: the film develops through oxidation and absorption into the substrate rather than under a UV lamp.
Why Security Inks Are Used Here
- Multi-detection — overt, covert and machine-readable features in a single printed document.
- Resistance to photocopying and scanning — the security response does not survive reproduction.
- Rub resistance and lamination-friendly behaviour for documents in constant circulation.
- Customisable colour profiles, so security features are designed into the artwork rather than added on top of it.
- Fogra certification and quality assurance across the Nanografi security ink portfolio.
